One thing that can be said for the energy market is that there are Too Many Acronyms (or, as we like to call it, TMA!). So, we’ve put together a glossary with all the need-to-knows:

BSC: Balancing and Settlement Code

The legal document setting out the rules for the operation and governance of the Balancing Mechanism and Imbalance Settlement. 

CERT: Carbon Emissions Reduction Target 

A government target for reducing carbon emissions through energy efficiency improvements. 

CRM: Customer Relationship Management

A system for managing a company’s interactions with current and potential customers.

DCC: Data and Communications Company

The company that manages the data and communications to and from smart meters.

Elexon: N/A

The company that manages the Balancing and Settlement Code (BSC) for the electricity market in Great Britain.

EMS: Energy Management System

A system for monitoring, controlling, and optimising the performance of the generation and/or transmission system.

EPC: Energy Performance Certificate

A certificate that rates the energy efficiency and environmental impact of a property.

ESOS: Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme

A mandatory energy assessment scheme for large organisations in the UK, requiring audits of energy use and efficiency.

FIT: Feed-in Tariff

A government scheme that pays small-scale renewable energy generators for the electricity they produce and export to the grid.

MRA: Master Registration Agreement

The now-defunct multi-party agreement between electricity suppliers and distribution companies to govern the essential interactions. This no longer exists, and has been replaced by REC.

NDRHI: Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive

A government scheme that provides financial incentives for renewable heat generation in non-domestic buildings.

Ofgem: Office of Gas and Electricity Markets

The government regulator for the electricity and downstream natural gas markets in Great Britain.

REC: Retail Energy Code

The REC is the main framework for governing Great Britain’s retail energy market. It standardises processes for supplier switching, metering, and data management to streamline operations across the sector.

REGO: Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin

A certificate that guarantees the electricity generated is from renewable sources.

ROC: Renewable Obligation Certificate

A certificate issued to operators of accredited renewable generating stations for the eligible renewable electricity they generate.

SPAA: Supply Point Administration Agreement

An agreement that sets out the inter-operational arrangements between gas suppliers and transporters in the UK retail market.

TPI: Third Party Intermediary

An intermediary company that facilitates transactions between energy suppliers and end-users.

ADS: Advanced Data Services 

The ‘Qualified’ service that provides the Advanced Retrieval and Processing Service. 

DA: Data Aggregator

A party responsible for aggregating meter readings for submission to the settlement process. 

DC: Data Collector

A party that retrieves and processes consumption data from meters for settlement purposes.

FSP: Full Settlement Participant

A market participant that is fully settled in the electricity market.

HHDC: Half-Hourly Data Collector

A party that retrieves and processes half-hourly consumption data from meters.

HHDA: Half-Hourly Data Aggregator

A party responsible for aggregating half-hourly meter readings for submission to the settlement process.

HHMO: Half-Hourly Meter Operator

A party responsible for installing and maintaining half-hourly meters.

HHS: Half-Hourly Settlement

The process of settling electricity supply and demand on a half-hourly basis.

MDD: Market Domain Data

The central repository of reference data used by participants in the electricity market.

MDR: Market Data Repository

A centralised database for storing and managing market data related to energy consumption and transactions.

MDS: Market Data Services

Services that provide market participants with access to market data and reports.

MEM: Meter Equipment Manager

A party responsible for the installation and maintenance of meters.

MHHS: Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement

Utilises smart meters to record usage during each half-hour period, allowing for more accurate billing and settlement.

MOP: Meter Operator

A company responsible for installing and maintaining electricity meters.

MPAN: Meter Point Administration Number

A unique identifier for electricity supply points used in the UK.

MPAS: Meter Point Administration Service

A service provided by distribution companies to manage MPANs and associated data.

MS: Metering System

The system comprising the meter and associated equipment used to measure energy consumption.

MRS: Meter Reading Service

A service that collects meter readings from customer premises.

NGESO: National Grid Electricity System Operator

The system operator for the electricity transmission network in Great Britain.

NHH: Non-Half-Hourly Settlement

The process of settling electricity supply and demand on a non-half-hourly basis.

NHHDA: Non-Half-Hourly Data Aggregator

A party responsible for aggregating non-half-hourly meter readings for submission to the settlement process.

NHHDC: Non-Half-Hourly Data Collector

A party that retrieves and processes non-half-hourly consumption data from meters.

NHHMO: Non-Half-Hourly Meter Operator

A party responsible for installing and maintaining non-half-hourly meters.

SCR: Significant Code Review

A process initiated by Ofgem to review and, if necessary, modify energy codes to deliver significant improvements.

SEC: Smart Energy Code

The code that sets out the rights and obligations for the management and operation of smart metering in Great Britain.

SMRS: Supplier Meter Registration Service

The service provided by suppliers for registering and managing meter points.

SP: Settlement Period

The half-hour time period used for electricity settlement.

STC: System Operator Transmission Owner Code

The code governing the relationship between the transmission system operator and transmission owners in the UK.

UEPT: User Entry Process Testing

The testing process required for new participants to enter the electricity market.

CM: Capacity Market

GEMA: Gas and Electricity Markets Authority

The governing body of Ofgem, responsible for regulating the gas and electricity markets in Great Britain.

GDN: Gas Distribution Network

The network of pipelines that distribute gas from the transmission system to consumers.

GASMAN: Gas Management System

A system for monitoring, controlling, and optimising the performance of the gas transmission system.

LNG: Liquefied Natural Gas

Natural gas that has been cooled to liquid form for ease of storage and transport.

NTS: National Transmission System

The high-pressure gas pipeline system in the UK used for the transmission of natural gas.

REGMAN: Regulation Management

Systems and processes used to ensure compliance with regulations in the energy market.

UNC: Uniform Network Code

The framework for the transportation and trading of gas across the UK gas network.
